As much as I hate to say it... Sebastien Vettel. I hate him and Red Bull, and for the purposes of this argument, I'm going to assume that all of the traction control rumors and the ilk aren't true and that Seb is actually as good as Newey makes him look. If this is actually the case, I don't think there's a better driver out there. Maybe some WRC guy, but I don't follow WRC. I probably should.

Purely on pedal ballet, Walter Rörhl.

But it's a really difficult thing to judge. So many different styles, classes and especially era's. The cars of yesteryear and the cars now are incomparable, therefor it's very hard to tell how drivers would compete in different times.

I think you need to clarify best driver of all-time, best driver currently, best driver at their peak, or most versatile driver. I am biased based on my age, but right now, all time, it's Michael Schumacher (or, maybe Valentino Rossi if you count motorcycles). Currently, it's Sébastien Loeb - and it's not even that close (unless you include motorcycles, then Travis Pastrana has a claim). Best driver at their peak might have been Ayrton Senna. And most versatile driver is Walter Röhrl (or Travis Pastrana if motorcycles count). Hat tip to Gilles Panizzi, who is probably the best tarmac driver I have seen.

Kinja'd!!!0

I thought this as well, best driver at their peak (impossible) or best driver now (possible, but hard).

Also, Gilles Panizzi in the early 2000's. Tarmac boss.

Unless you sub-classify each, then it comes down to personal preference. Formula 1? NASCAR? (if motorcycles are included, SuperCross or Moto GP?) Hell, even NASCAR if that is your thing. Derek Zoolander was a great driver, but he could only turn left...

Kinja'd!!! Hoccy > JasonStern911

Kinja'd!!!0

I think they should have proven themselves in more than one kind of motorsport. At least the ability to adapt to other kinds of driving counts for something. If a NASCAR driver can do rallycross, well it's a good thing. No driver has ever been a world champion in two different championships, but that might happen this year with Loeb in WTCC and Solberg in WorldRX.

Kinja'd!!! JasonStern911 > Hoccy
01/28/2014 at 02:22

Kinja'd!!!0

Respect to Loeb, but is Rally and RallyCross really that different? Why not include drivers that won Formula 3 championships and moved onto Formula 1, Group 2 and Group A, Bush League and... Obama League? (not a NASCAR fan, obviously. although I do respect the drivers.)

Kinja'd!!! Hoccy > JasonStern911

Kinja'd!!!0

Rally and rallycross are quite different, but it depends on what aspects you look at. Yes, both motorsports have AWD turbo hatchbacks running on tarmac and gravel, but that's about it.

And all the best drivers drive or have driven at the top level of their sport. Winning those lower tier classes are more a way of getting to the top level.

Living, or dead? Racing currently, or retired?

I'm throwing Vettel for currently racing and living, and Fangio for dead and retried. Might shake up the ranks a bit, though I'm fairly sure both would lose when compared to Shumi, though I don't necessarily think so. Shumi was a great winner in a dangerous era with faster cars, but Fangio and Vettel both have perfected flawless technique in combination with good cars. Faster, no, but better drivers, yes.

Sebastien Loeb. He basically left WRC because he was bored winning all the time. He came to the X Games and owned the RallyX like the other drivers were just kids in push cars. He holds the record at Pikes Peak, and can jump into F1 any time he wants to.

Hans-Joachim Stuck and apparently Joachim is German for "Motherfucking badass"

You want some numbers? WELL HERE'S YOUR FUCKING NUMBERS

2 outright wins at 24 hours of LeMans, an additional class win, and multiple overall podiums over two decades of competing

3 overall wins at 24h of Nurburgring

2 third places in F1

1988 SCCA Trans-Am, 1989 IMSA-GTO, and 1990 DTM multiple race winner (and champion in DTM) racing for Audi using three very different cars.

There are also dozens of assorted victories across multiple disciplines in his 40+ year career as a racing driver so I'll let you find your own. But to drive so many different pieces of machinery and be able to find success with them all is amazing. Typically your "best of the best" got that way by specializing on one particular vehicle. Yes, that talent can translate to other cars as well, but being a front running F1 driver does not magically grant you the ability to be an ace driver in WRC, NASCAR, DTM, or any other series.

Vettel had a first-round wreck if I recall right and Schumacher's getting old. Romain raced Schumacher in the KTM X-bow, which is a very different philosophy (low downforce, low HP) than what Schumacher used to race, so the experience gap didn't help him much.

Romain isn't a bad driver, but he won due to some favorable circumstances. Both Vettel an Shumacher beat his qualifying time, and Vettel came in first, so I'd say all three of them could have taken the title (though I argue that Vettel would have won it over Schumi) at any point.
